Omega Seamaster - Mariner 1

Omega Seamaster - Mariner 1

The most Bond-y of watches that was never a Bond watch. The Omega Seamaster Mariner 1 was created in 1976 with seafaring in mind as you can see from its porthole-like appearance.

Aesthetically there's a lot going on; Firstly, the combination of brushed and polished steel announces its versatility. Then there's all the sharp edges playing off of the shapley curves.  Next, a floating dial with chrome indices, syringe hands and then a rather large 'Quartz' plate on one of the many sides. (this one is missing as a lot of people removed them due to Quartz shame or they just fell out). The whole design is a contradiction but it just works.

My favourite part is the truly unique bracelet; Brick-like layers that smoothly tapper down from 21mm to 14mm in just 8 links. To add to this design flow is the horizontal finish of the brushed steel. it just looks so clean, so masculine, so futuristic...or at least what the future was meant to be like in the '70s.

Even with all that going on this watch somehow tricks you into its simplicity, I've worn it with a suit and on the Sunday coffee run. I have honestly never had so many people comment on a watch I was wearing than with this one.
