Omega De Ville - Gold + Black
Omega's De Ville series has been going since 1960. Designed to be a dressy alternative to the more sporty Seamasters, it's slimmer, sexier designs paved way for the summer of love in 69 when the De Ville series became the most popular of Omega's offerings.
This particular example dates to around the early 70's. Are we saying it and its kin were solely responsible for the free love moment? Yes, yes we are.
Just look at the contrast between the yellow-gold plated bezel and the deep noir of the dial. The unusual oval shape alludes to the experimentation of time, whereas the roman numerals bring us crashing back to the classic nature of what a dress watch is.
50 odd years on, you feel this watch has that certain 'heirloom gravitas' only certain examples at its price point have. It's at home with a tux or casual shirt and jeans, meaning special occasions are its thing. It's been there and done it, tried, tested and ready for the next 50.
